First Congregational Church
in the heart of Cooper-Young
A two-year community effort
to halt demolition of the Fairgrounds’ historic park
has resulted in the miraculous rescue
of the landmark Carousel
and Zippin Pippin rollercoaster.
However, while other features of the Fairgrounds
have remained in use
(Coliseum, Liberty Bowl, Mid-South Fairgrounds, Creative Arts Building — even the Flea Market)
the only padlocked area has (for two years) been the historic park,
saved from auction by our community effort.
This inequitable and discriminatory “public process”
ends Thursday night,
a couple of days after Henry Turley
and the state legislature
revealed what all the ruckus has been about all along:
Taxpayer-funded Target/WalMart store construction.
We are calling for a halt
to any further demolition of the site
until the basic inequities
of this so-called “public process”
have been thoroughly investigated and accounted for,
and/or until a new Administration and City Council
are installed after the October 4 election.
There are still a few Memphians
who have not sold their souls
to the twin demons of demolition/development.
Come join us as we “Take It To Church.”
